Too Costly to Study in Turkey

It seems that Turkish private higher education is loosing its cost competitiveness. According to Bugün daily, via Turkish Daily News of 6 September 2008, due to increased annual fees, it is now sometimes cheaper to study in the U.K. or in the U.S than in Turkey. In the cases of certain universities such as Yeditepe, Koç and Sabancı, the annual tuition fees are even double or triple those of universities abroad.

To study Dentistry at Yeditepe University, for example, the student is asked to pay 20,200 USD (25,000 YTL) whereas in the United States the "same" program will cost 13,000 – 14,000 USD. U.K.’s University of London offers the “same” program for 22,000 USD.

Sabancı and Koç Universities have announced that they will charge annual tuition fees of 20,000 USD for Economics and Engineering in the academic year 2008-09. At the University of Arkansas, for instance, the fee is only 6,000 USD and at the University of Alabama, 7,000 USD.

“You cannot study in Turkey for less than 10,000 YTL [8,000 USD],” said Serdar Erdem from Oxford Vision, a London-based Consultancy Agency providing guidance and counseling to international students who wish to study in the UK. “For the same price, students can study at England's best universities.”
For the purpose of comparison, one can also consider the tuition fees charged by the American University of Armenia, the most expensive institution in the country. The annual tuition for Armenian citizens and permanent residents currently stands at 3,100 USD (960,000 AMD) and for the others at 10,900 USD (3,300,000 AMD).
